CHARACTER MEANINGS
The Japanese word for BISHAMONTEN is bishamonten, written in kanji as 毘沙門天.
毘沙門天 (Bishamonten) is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. This god is based on the Hindu deity Kubera, but is not identical to this god.
In Japan Bishamonten is viewed as an armor-clad God of war or warriors, and is a punisher of evil-doers. He is also associated with protection and prosperity.
The meaning of the individual characters is not directly connected the way this god is viewed, but we will still give definitions for each character. The first character 毘 (bi) means "to compare", "to save", or "more", the second character 沙 (sha) means "sand", the third character 門 (mon) means "gate", and the fourth character 天 (ten) means "heaven" or "divine being".
