布袋尊 (Hoteison) is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. Hoteison is often depicted as a cheerful, pot-bellied monk carrying a bag and is associated with happiness, contentment, and good fortune.
The name Hoteison is a compound of three Japanese kanji. The first character 布 (ho) means "cloth", the second character 袋 (tei) means "bag", and the third character 尊 (son) is an honorific title meaning "revered" or "esteemed".
